I have a spare 1TB lying around the house and I want to convert it into a network drive on the lan. The wikihow on the topic says to connect the hard drive to the USB port on my router. My router however has none. Only ethernet ports. So how do I do it ? Can I use the adapters in the market for this purpose ?

What is your operating system? You can easily make this a "share" from any computer, the instructions would very significantly depending on your OS though.

If you are insistent on making it a share via Ethernet, then you need a NAS enclosure, which although easy to get is significantly more expensive than the hard drive, it would be cheaper to get a newer router with a USB port designed for sharing an external hard drive (a LOT cheaper most likely). A decent NAS enclosure will run you $200 USD, a cheap router with a USB port can be had for $50 USD.
