bypass network password to create new user

I have an old XP computer that was setup years ago on a secure network. It was setup so that the startup screen would only list the network you wanted to log into.

The company gave the computer to me as they were replacing them, but I never really used after the change.

I now want to use it, years later, but cannot log into it.

I can't remember the password
The password and user wouldn't be good anymore. Is there a way I can create another user without signing onto the network? I just want it to be a stand alone laptop without password or network.
Tried going into safe mode to see if I could bypass the current startup screen.

Everything I have found on the net is for Windows 7 and I don't have the screens to try their ideas.

Anyone know?

  • Do you have the license key for Windows XP? It may be best to reinstall the OS cleanly.

If you will never connect it to the Internet or install questionable software on it, there will be minimal risk in using it with XP. But recognize that XP is long out of support, so it's a target for any exploits that can get to it. Also, it will become harder and harder to find software and drivers that will run on it. But to your question, is there an IT person at your company who would be familiar with the computer's setup, and could give you instructions (or the password)? Depending on how you want to use it, you may also have other options than using it as-is.

Have you tried logging in with the local administrator account? It might have a blank password. To try, enter .administrator in the username box to "bypass" logging in with a domain account.
