ClipConverter.cc and “Leave this page” pop-ups
So I currently use ClipConverter.cc to convert music from YouTube into .mp3 files. The site itself is innocent and in my opinion is the best website to grab high-quality music from YouTube.
However, sometimes when I click the Download button after it finishes converting, a malicious advert or pop-up opens in a new tab. These could range from silly offers to Security Tool-style popups, the latter of which being potentially very dangerous.
These "adverts" will also be programmed to prompt the user if they want to leave or stay on the page with a custom message, such as "WARNING! YOU HAVE 3049 INFECTED FILES ON YOUR COMPUTER, STAY ON THIS PAGE TO REMOVE THEM" or something like that.
Now I have been told before that the morons who program these kind of things also make it so that when you click X on a pop-up it will perform its real intended purpose - perhaps downloading a hidden file to some obscure place on my PC to allow it to be secretly used as a botnet or something. That was a few years back though, so it could be outdated.
My question is: in Google Chrome, when you are given the dialouge box to leave or stay on the page, is anything downloaded, created or done to your PC when you click Leave this Page? Or does Chrome harmlessly exit? Are files downloaded when the page is even opened?
I have appropriate security software including Malwarebytes, and I also have AdBlock installed. Which makes me sad because AdBlock is supposed to block these malicious pop-ups as well as ads - that's the primary reason I switched to Chrome years ago.
As for ClipConverter, I found a work-around in the form of right clicking the download link and clicking "Save Link As" instead of clicking it normally.

Which Adblocker exactly do you have installed? Which filter lists are activated?

The normal one - first result you'll get when you Google it. Filter lists are acceptable ads, AdBlock custom filters, and EasyList. Didn't know these were checked in the first place.

There’s no “normal” one. Google results may be ordered differently depending on where you are. Please provide a link.

I have used this website before for this purpose and have experienced those same ads. Those are ads that you see before downloading the file. For me, The ad opens up in a new tab and if I close it quickly enough then no harm is done. Clicking the link a second time will download the file.
I believe the reason they do this is because since they are providing free services, they need to be somehow compensated for hosting this service. By using pop up ads, they can make money when you use their site, in an effective, albeit annoying way.
If you like clipconverter.cc, rest assurred that nothing malicious is happening behind the scenes as long as you close pop up tabs quickly and use the appropriate links. If you would like a different solution, there are many other alternatives as well like keepvid.com and youtube-mp3.org.
