With the Brotherhood of Steel being wiped out in Appalachia, who is flying the random vertibirds that appear throughout Fallout 76?

Fallout 76 starts on October 23 2102. This is much earlier in the timeline compared to other Fallout games, for example Fallout 4 starts October 23, 2287.

So at the time of Fallout 76 the BoS has not yet been decimated. Important to note is also that the Brotherhood has several chapters on the West and East coast so chances are big that they have not been completely wiped out.

The BoS is also not the only operator of the Vertibirds, the Enclave also uses them.

In Fallout 76 specifically there are automated Vertibirds flying around, known as Vertibots.

  • I don't know about Fallout 4 or 76, but BoS is certainly around during Fallout 1, 2, 3 and New Vegas, which take place between 2161 and 2281. As is Enclave (well, post-FO2, to a degree; but they certainly do have vertibirds). I don't remember the timeline regarding BoS, but I think Enclave at least was active all the time after the war.

  • Project: Safehouse, aka the Societal Preservation Program, tasked the Enclave to oversee the vaults; active since before the war for 23y. – Space program in Fallout universe. Given that one of your tasks in F2 is to steal plans for the BoS, the SF faction doesn't have any yet, as of the end of F2, circa 2241.

  • Ah, Vertibots are also the large aircraft. I thought that name referred to only the small cargo drones.
