Kafka Connect with Microservices

I have been reading about Kafka Connect for quite some time but am struggling to understand its utility with respect to the following two items:
(1) Where would Kafka Connect fit in a microservice architecture where each microservice manages its own data (source/sink)? Perhaps it is part of a standalone Kafka instance completely managed by a specific microservice? But that leads me to my next question:
(2) Why would I use Kafka Connect instead of a Spring Cloud Streams/Spring Data application where the Spring app is a Kafka endpoint? With the ongoing maturity of Spring Boot for both Spring Cloud Streams and Spring Data, the amount of code needed and the time to get solid working code are both drastically reduced?
Kafka Connect sounds very interesting; any help to further my conceptual understanding would be greatly appreciated. Also, any implementation examples not on the Confluent website would be appreciated as well.
