what's renderer for 3d animation? [closed]

I'm confused of concept for the 3d renderer.
d3d or opengl is used for rendering 3d object to screen.
But what's renderer?
The result of googling says that renderer use cpu mostly.
So, doesn't renderer use d3d or opengl?
And, does renderer make video using ffmpeg?
please help my brain.
