VirtualBox USB initialization on a SSH session

0

When I start my Ubuntu guest through the VirtualBox GUI interface, my USB device (Yubikey 4) works fine. The problem arises when I start my guest in headless mode and connect to it with an SSH client: the USB device is listed on lsusb but it does not work at all. If I attach a GUI on this headless VM and login there, logout and detach the GUI, USB device starts working, even for the SSH client.

How can I get USB devices working on VM started in headless mode?

System specs:

  • Windows 10 host

  • Ubuntu server 18.04 guest

  • VirtualBox 5.2.22

  • Yubikey 4 USB device
