redis: MAINPID not set?

0

I have installed redis on an ubuntu bionic server. I can start it, but stopping is not possible with sudo systemctl stop redis-server.service. That command hangs forever.
In the service script (/etc/systemd/system/redis.service), a pid file is created with
ExecStartPost?=/bin/sh -c "echo $MAINPID > /var/run/redis/redis.pid"

This creates an empty pid file, however. That makes me suspect that $MAINPID is not set. And that would explain why the stopcommand fails: that executes

ExecStop=/bin/kill -s TERM $MAINPID

And if $MAINPID is empty, that would explain why service stop hangs: it waits for user input.

Any ideas if there is an alternative to using $MAINPID?
