org.gtk.vfs.Metadata - Timeout results into Nautilus freeze
when running Nautilus with a non-root user and browsing a folder outside of the own home directory (e.g. the root directory /), Nautilus freezes ~ 10-30 seconds before opening up the desired directory.
If running Nautilus in console, the following error message appears after the freeze:
(nautilus:5177): GVFS-WARNING **: 16:30:46.532: Error: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gtk.vfs.Metadata: Timeout was reached
With the same nautilus process, everything works perfect after the freeze. -> opening the same or another directory outside home works as usual without any freeze.
Also running Nautilus as root works perfect -> result into no freeze and no error message.
I had this problem since I got the PC (fresh Ubuntu 18.04 install from our University IT department) and I already tried to sudo apt-get remove/install nautilus.
Anyone an Idea, how to fix this problem?
Thanks in advance.
UPDATE:
I also tried to change the permissions / ownership of the org.gtk.vfs.Metadata file which I found under "/usr/share/dbus-1/services/", but without luck.
Additionally, I discovered that not only nautilus but also gedit or evince have 10-30 second freezes after processing files outside the home directory.
WORKAROUND:
I discovered that just moving/deleting the org.gtk.vfs.Metadata file, fixes the freezes :)
BUT: Obviously excluding the file isn't a real solution for this bug. Like expected, instead of the timeout warning, a warning that org.gtk.vfs.Metadata can't be executed/found is shown.
Like already said, it fixes the problem that Nautilus/gedit/evince freeze in order to wait for the response of this Metadata service, but not the problem why this service is broken in my system :/
