Synergy 1.8 connection refused / timed out between 2 ubuntu16 machines via crossover ethernet

I tried several combinations, including (most up to date) setting both wired interfaces associated to the crossover-ethernet cable to an manual static IP address.
Note that I tried to connect the two IP addresses (192[...] and 172[...]).
How could I make it work please? By thanking you in advance.

Pictures are (somewhat) nice, but please explain what you are doing in words. In particular, why do you have IP addresses in the 172 range and the 192 range?
