How are Linux distributions made?

-1

I am trying to make my own private Debian distro but I don't want to install everything by mounting the iso, then use apt to install everything and burning the iso with dd again.
How is this done with big distributions like Kubuntu? How do they pre-install programs?

If using mount, apt, and dd is too much work, I'm confident you really don't want to attempt creating your own distribution.

  • @Xen2050 It's not too much work, I just think there is a cleaner way to do it.

  • Assuming Ubuntu/Debian ( you mentioned Kubuntu and Debian, which have their own nasty differences ) is your target OS to 'build' you might wanna look into the way a os tree is built/controlled and try a native netinstall ( preferrably a pxe boot of some fashion) that will give you a decent taste of the mess you claim to wanna play with

  • Some distros come with a utility for turning your current installation into a distro. But even that isn't trivial. I'm not sure the question is answerable within the intended scope, other than in such a generic way as to not be useful.

  • There is an entire website to learn this: linuxfromscratch.org. This question is good but too broad.
