Can anyone give me an idea how to get the sum of this series? [closed]

I would like to get some tips how to solve a problem, not the actual solution but which mathemathical operations to apply to solve the problem. The problems says the following: (It's a programming problem but I don't know how to solve it math wise).
Write a function to calculate the energy of the sequence S.
The sequence is defined as $S= s_{1}s_{2}...s_{L}, s_{i} epsilon {(+1,-1)}$
$$E(S)= sum_{k=1}^{L-1} C_{k}^2(S)$$
$$C_{k}(S)= sum_{i=1}^{L-k} s_{i}s_{i}+k $$
