Windows guest failing to install with virt-install on linux

0

So I run virt-isntall with an ISO image along the lines of the example here: https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/6/html/virtualization_host_configuration_and_guest_installation_guide/sect-virtualization_host_configuration_and_guest_installation_guide-windows_installations-installing_windows_xp_as_a_fully_virtualized_guest

Command line on Centos 6.9 host:

virt-install
--name=winbuilds01
--os-type=windows
--network bridge=vlan20
--disk path=winbuilds01.dsk,size=30
--cdrom=/iso/master/Win10_1709_English_x64.iso
--graphics vnc,port=9801
--ram=4096
--vcpus=4

And I get this output:

Starting install...
Creating domain... | 0 B 00:01
Cannot open display:
Run 'virt-viewer --help' to see a full list of available command line options
Domain installation still in progress. Waiting for installation to complete.

Can't open display is expected because I'm ssh'ed in. I can tunnel a VNC viewer to the system and that connects just fine. What I see is a mostly black screen with a blue Windows logo in the center. And nothing else happens. It doesn't respond to keyboard, mouse, or VNC sending ctrl-alt-delete. I've left it overnight now with no change.

What am I doing wrong?

  • At this point my working theory is the libvirt / qemu installed are incompatible with Windows 10. Centos 6.9 is old.
