Extending Displays for Laptop to 2 monitors + the Laptop screen display?

I have a Lenovo Z500 Ideapad w/ one HMDI and VGA port.
The graphics/display configuration is:
Intel HD Graphics 4000 | NVIDIA GeForce GT740M
I tried connecting one of my monitors to VGA (using VGA-to-VGA connection) and another monitor (TV) using the HDMI port. However, it never detects both the monitors and only the VGA seem to be working/detected with both VGA an HDMI cables plugged into these monitors. Am I running into some kind of limitation with my configuration/setup?
I did search for answers over the web but haven't come across anything useful or that can clarify this situation for me. I also referred the below post but as the graphics card is different in this one, I suspect an issue with my configuration:
Run two external monitors using one HDMI port and one VGA port
Can someone provide me with a solution to this issue? I'm trying to use the two monitors to extend my display and not clone the display from my laptop. Also, I would like to keep my laptop display on as well. So in total, there would be 3 display I'll be looking at.
