Is it possible to install virtualbox-guest-additions from package manager?

0

It seems there are 3 ways to install the virtualbox guest additions, but 2 of them do not work.

For years I have found the virtualbox guest additions in package managers of multiple linux distros.

An example, when running a Fedora 29 guest, dnf search virtualbox comes back with virtualbox-guest-additions.x86_64. Anaconda even has guest agents as an option in the software selection when installing Fedora.

However, when I install these guest additions from the package manager (or anaconda), it never seems to work. To test, I am trying to mount a shared folder, but I get the error unknown filesystem type 'vboxsf'. If I use the CD, I can mount the folder no problem. I have had the same issue in ubuntu in the past as well, though I haven't tried it recently.

Am I doing something wrong? Are there additional packages or configurations that I need to take care of? If not, it seems I am misunderstanding the point of these packages being in the package repos, educate me? I have exhausted google it seems...
